Sorensen sweeps NAPA North Star Nationals

The USRA Modifieds were on the card Saturday as part of the NAPA North Star Nationals at Deer Creek Speedway. A huge crowd was on hand to watch the USRA Modifieds and the first-ever appearance of the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series.

Thirty-seven USRA Modifieds checked in and they ran five heat races that took the top 12 in passing points to the feature. There were two 12-lap "B" Mains that locked in the top six cars in each race to create the 24-car field for the 30-lap, $2000-to-win feature.

NAPA Auto Parts and NAPA AutoCare Centers offered bonuses if the driver displayed a NAPA sticker on each side of his or her car. A $100 bonus to the heat race winners and a $1,000 bonus for the feature winner was possible.

Heat race winners included Brad Waits, Cory Mahder, Jake Timm, Keith Foss and Dustin Sorensen.  The two "B" Mains were topped by USMTS stars Rodney Sanders and Zack Vanderbeek.

Sorensen drew the number one pill when the top eight in passing points redrew. Waits started outside of row one. Sorensen and Waits dueled on the first lap with Matt Leer and Lucas Schott behind them. Schott passed Leer on lap two and then set after Waits.

Schott challenged on the next lap and then stole second. Sorensen had already opened up a half-straight-away lead at this point. Timm triggered a yellow on lap five and that erased Sorensen’s big advantage.

When the green flew, so did Sorensen and he opened up an advantage over Schott. Waits now had a challenge from Tony Schill and Foss for the third spot. Waits held them off as Schill and Foss now had a good race for fourth.

Meanwhile, 14th starter Zack VanderBeek edged closer to the top five and was on Schill for fifth on lap 19. VanderBeek slipped past, and then got by Foss for fourth on lap 22. Back up front, Sorensen still led Schott, but they were into lapped traffic.

Set up with an Action Engineering concept engine under the hood of his USRA Modified, Sorensen sliced through the back of the field but Schott was able to close in with a couple of laps left. Schott got close on the final lap, but Sorensen held him off for the $2,000 check and the $1,000 NAPA bonus money. VanderBeek’s charge from row seven ended in third when he passed Waits with a few laps left. Foss rounded out the top five at the checkered flag.
