Hicks, Wray, Hovden top Tompkins Industries Night at I-35 Speedway

Opening ceremonies at the I-35 Speedway would set the stage for a night of great racing action Saturday as drivers and crews presented our nation's colors on the front straight and all stood for the invocation and National Anthem.

The Out-Pace USRA B-Mods saw Dan Hovden win both his heat race and feature, out-pacing the field and proving why he is a Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national champion contender.

Hovden did not have it easy as Shadren Turner tried slider after slider to get the lead but was forced to settle for second place.

Heat winner and track points leader Bud Wilson raced his way to third with Jeff Elder placing fourth. The other heat winner, Blake Pierce, recovered from an early race slip to end the feature a solid fifth.

Holley USRA Stock Cars provided one of the best races of the night as Dean Wray and Brett Heeter squared off in the front of the field. Wray set the pace early as Heeter had to work through traffic until a yellow flag bunched the field.

Wray held tight to the top of the track with Heeter searching to get the front as the laps wound down. As the white flag was shown, Heeter made his move on the inside off of turn four and raced Wray to the line, coming up a little short as Wray picked up his 18th win of the 2017 season at the I-35 Speedway.

Heeter finished second by less than a half-car-length with Holley USRA Stock Car national points leader Mitch Hovden a close third. Fourth went to Malcolm Teachout with Tim Shields coming from the back to get fifth.

The USRA Modifieds featured the best of the best with great racing action from start to finish. Heat race winners Derrick Hicks and Gunner Martin led the field to the green flag with Martin taking the early advantage. Martin continued to use the high line to perfection until Hicks made a daring slide job and take the top spot.

Hicks would not be denied and pulled away from the rest of the field en route to victory. As Hicks celebrated in McCarthy Auto Group Winners Circle, Martin placed second with points leader Dennis Elliott a close third. Fourth went to John Hanson with the fifth spot going to Billie Hoover.

I-35 Speedway would like to thank all our drivers and fans for another night of great racing action and see everyone next Saturday where there is always more “Dirt Trackin’ at its Best.”
