Zevenbergen, Moudry claim Iron Man Challenge wins at Nobles County Speedway

Elijah Zevenbergen won the Holley USRA Stock Car feature.

The four-day string of Iron Man Challenge events could not be going any better for Ocheyedan, Iowa’s Elijah Zevenbergen. The Holley USRA Stock Car ace chalked up his third series win in as many nights at the Nobles County Speedway Saturday, with Mason City, Iowa, remaining on the weekend schedule. In doing so, Zevenbergen earned a $200 bonus from Big Orv’s Bar in Adrian. The bonus comes from winning on back-to-back nights with Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Zevenbergen’s win was a lot tougher than the first two this week. Thursday, he cruised to a dominating win on the half-mile track at Sioux Center, Iowa. He also led comfortably at Rapid Speedway on Friday. The Worthington Glass Holley USRA Stock Car feature was a hotly contested race with four lead changes. Spencer Kalass of Luverne came from third to lead the first couple of laps. Worthington driver Dustin Larson moved up from seventh to get by Kalass to become the second leader.

Zevenbergen started alongside Larson. It took him a little longer to get to the front, but when he did it looked like he’d be there for good. That was until a couple of late cautions created some tense moments at the front. With Zevenbergen and Larson concerned with each other’s whereabouts, Derek Green of Granada snuck by the two drivers to grab the lead on a restart. However, after a little rubbing with Larson, Zevenbergen found the momentum he needed to get past Green and land in victory lane.

Green was able to place second, followed by Larson, Jesse Brown and Luke Sathoff. Iron Man Challenge points leader Steve Jackson was the hard charger. He gained nine positions to finish sixth.

The DeRuyter Pallets Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature was also an Iron Man Challenge points race. Last year's Iron Man Challenge points champion and 2015 Out-Pace USRA B-Mod national champion Andy Bryant, Fort Scott, Kan., was attempting to win on consecutive nights. He led the majority of the feature with Montrose, S.D.’s Tyler Johnson chasing him around the track. Johnson finished second to Bryant the night before at Rock Rapids, but it was Ben Moudry of Hastings that stole their thunder.

Moudry, who started fourth, found his groove late in the race to pass Johnson and Bryant in scoring his first-ever Iron Man Challenge win. Johnson eventually got past Bryant as well for another second-place finish. After Bryant, Kyle Anderson and Dan Hovden finished fourth and fifth. Iron Man Challenge points leader Cole Denner started seventh and finished seventh.

Ben Moudry won the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature.

Eighteen cars competed in the Schwalbach Plumbing & Heating USRA Hobby Stock portion of the show which saw a great run by 2011 USRA Hobby Stock national champion Dan Strandberg of Worthington. Strandberg, who started on the pole, watched Justin Luinenberg of Reading grab the lead from the second position. But Strandberg made a perfect pass in the fourth turn of the second lap to grab the lead which he did not relinquish even though Luinenberg followed closely behind for the final 14 laps.

Malik Sampson and Blake Arends were third and fourth. Chad Lonneman raced from 17th to fifth.

Dan Strandberg won the USRA Hobby Stock feature.
