Fito Gallardo goes flag to flag in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, N.M.—The Southern New Mexico Speedway was packed and ready for a quick night of racing once again as the USRA Modifieds made the journey back Saturday for some short track antics with the Holley USRA Stock Cars also creating a little dust in the desert as the sun goes down.

The Holley USRA Stock Cars had the first shot at the tricky track tonight for 20 laps. Pete Vargas went to an early lead but had a bumper full of Donovan Flores while Lloyd Turner darted his way into third quickly in the first laps. With six laps complete, Vargas spun and went to the rear of the field for the restart. Nonetheless, he battled back to the front and got his first win. Turner was second with Jaime Torres rounding out the top three.

Pete Vargas won the Holley USRA Stock Car feature.

The USRA Modifieds had 25 laps on the board with Fito Gallardo on the pole. Despite leading all the way, this one came down to the wire as Gallardo fought off many challengers. Jimmy Ray was the first challenger as Donovan Flores closed in on the top side. After a red flag and some yellows, the field was keeping things interesting up front with Jake Gallardo on the move and into the top four with 19 circuits still to go. Battling lapped traffic at the end, Fito beat Jake to the finish line to win by mere inches. Christy Barnett-Goerges was third.

If you missed the action tonight then don’t do the same next weekend. Gates open at 5:30 with racing at 7:45.
